Gion Matsuri Festival Kyoto Japan 17th July 2008
Gion Matsuri Festival Kyoto Japan 2008. This was a most ornate cultural spectacle as this clip will attest. Follow the link for further pictures and information on this festival
Notice how the wheels can not turn the float round a corner. To turn the float wooden slats are placed at right angles under the front wheels, lubricated with water and then a team of about twenty men drag the wheels across the slats to turn the float. This process was repeated several times and took about 10 minutes to enable the float to turn one street corner.
